Globalization, in its literal sense, is the process of globalizing, transformation of some things or phenomena into global ones. It can be described as a process by which the people of the world are unified into a single society and function together. This process is a combination of economic, technological, socio-cultural and political forces. Globalization is very often used to refer to economic globalization, that is integration of national economies into the international economy through trade, foreign direct investment, capital flows, migration, and the spread of technology. Does it hurt or help? There are many that are on opposite sides of the spectrum on this subject.

One way of looking at it is through the eyes of Thomas L. Friedman. He examines the impact of the “flattening of the globe”. He argues that globalized trade, outsourcing, supply-chaining, and political forces have changed the world permanently, for both better and worse. He also argues that the pace of globalization is quickening and will continue to have a growing impact on business organization and practice.

On the other side of the spectrum, there is Naomi Klein. In 2000, Klein published the book No Logo, which for many became a manifesto of the anti-globalization movement. The book lambaste brand-oriented consumer culture by describing the operations of large corporations. These corporations are also accused of being often guilty of exploiting workers in the world's poorest countries in pursuit of ever-greater profits, she writes. Klein criticized Nike so much in the book that it became one of the first publications to receive feedback from the company. No Logo became an international bestseller, selling over one million copies, and translated into over 28 languages.
So now that you know both arguments, which do you identify with? I personally agree with Thomas Friedman’s reasoning. I feel that globalization is good because it creates jobs and an economic structure in countries that are suffering or are not capable of doing it themselves. It helps boost their economic growth as well as allows them all the luxuries we take for granted here in America. These countries have a choice not to accept it, but they want it and they do accept. It they wished to maintain their way of living and their culture, they have the choice simply refusing to be a part of globalization. We all have a choice to some degree. It allows other countries to experience growth and maybe catch up with the United States.
Looking at the other side, I can see why there are arguments against this. Jobs are taken away from us as well as Naomi Klien’s side of the argument. But I feel that the choice is up to these remote areas and they should not be deprived of something they wish to pursue. This is why I feel that globalization is good. It comes down to a matter of choice and acceptance.
